some time ago, local roots reggae phenoms all natro hit me up asking me to shoot a few photos for their upcoming album cover. part of the vibe they wanted was an urban hawaiian setting, to stray from the usual tropical cruising at the beach vibe that reggae albums draw upon. partially because one of their vocalists/percussionists is a fellow pockets full of monsters crewmember ckaweeks….and also because this is reggae meant for the modern world, and the modern realities of urban honolulu.
after a few hours trooping through chinatown and shooting them in a few alleyways as well as on hotel st. at dusk (a challenging setting, i might add), we were done. i also shot individual band members’ portraits, which were included in the liner notes below. one day kaweeks broke me off with the finished album, and just about the only thing more surprising to me than my photography laid out in an album was what i heard when i gave the CD a twirl.
if you ain’t heard about all natro, you shoulda woulda and coulda…peep them on myspace, listen to a few tunes, and don’t miss the album release party this friday, may 22nd at pipeline cafe. big ups to the band, great job fellas, and props to homie newkon for some nice layout work.
