my history with the boys at b-ware goes back a few years at this point. when i think of booking a shoot for these guys, the words “pirate,” “hooligan,” “beer,” “random,” and “i just pulled it out my ass.” all come to mind. with some clients, extensive planning and a fleshing out of ideas usually takes place long before i ever pick up a camera and start clicking. but that isn’t the case with b-ware. usually, our formula for success goes something like this: “hey aaron, let’s get a bunch of the homies together and take pictures of them while they are __________ (insert really crazy, possibly impractical idea here).” then we do some minimal prep work, and on the day of we simply wing it and do whatever pops into mind first, as it relates to our original concept.
for some people this might seem like a lot of risk, but in my work with them, the spontaneity, energy, and semi-drunkness can’t be faked. it can’t be planned for. it can’t be staged. it just has to happen. and somehow, it always works out. it’s very zen like that.
jim and john just opened a new retail store up in chinatown, and besides needing press photos, they needed an image for an upcoming writeup in Innov8 magazine. so i showed up, and sort of took pictures of the chaos as it unfolded. okay maybe it took a little more work than that but a lot less than you’d believe. seriously. so check out their store, it’s super sick, and enjoy the photos!
