i know this update is coming pretty late, but hey it’s been a busy year.

i found myself in hilo friday night a few months ago…but it wasnt just any friday night.  it was the group hula kahiko night at the merrie monarch festival…and the vans vault/sig zane designs mauka to makai launch party.

when i got on the plane to ITO, i thought i was going just to cover the mauka to makai launch party for the honolulu star-advertiser…but when i got to edit kanaka`ole stadium and somebody decided to give me a surprise and handed me a press pass, i knew it was going to be an amazing night.  now getting a press pass might not seem like a big deal, but in this case it is…getting that kind of access at merry monarch is extremely difficult.  i got to snap a few shots of the performances through the night for sig zane, and i got free reign of most of the stadium.  epic.

the party went down at the hilo hawaiian hotel and it was equally epic.  i loved the kanikapila style format and even though i have much respect for the DJs that keep the party moving…having kumu hula, singers, and friends come together to make music and dance hula purely for the joy of doing it, well how the hell do you beat that?

it was a short trip, the next morning i jetted off to sig zane’s shop in hilo to snap a few shots of the official launch and of course to cop a pair of the mauka shoes for myself.  then it was off to the airport and back to oahu/reality.  mahalo piha to the zane/kanaka`ole `ohana for always extending such warm, amazing hospitality.  photos are below, i shot most of the night with my trusty 5d mkii, but the second gallery’s a little black and white film action i developed on the toilet.  well not literally on the toilet. ok i’m just gonna stop now.

enjoy.
